CHAPTER 01

Types of Compressors in HVAC

Understanding the 5 main compressor types

❓ What is a Compressor?

A compressor is the heart of an HVAC and refrigeration system. Its main job is to compress refrigerant gas and circulate it through the system to enable the cooling cycle.

5 Main Types:

01
Reciprocating Compressor

Piston-type compressor. The piston moves up and down inside a cylinder to compress refrigerant gas. Best suited for high-pressure industrial applications.

Oil & Gas Plants Chemical Industries Refineries
02
Rotary Compressor

Small AC compressor. A roller rotates inside a cylinder, reducing gas volume and compressing it. Compact, quiet, and widely used in home ACs.

Split ACs Window ACs Small Refrigerators
03
Scroll Compressor

Uses two spiral-shaped scrolls (one fixed, one orbiting) to trap and compress gas. Very efficient, quiet, and durable with fewer moving parts.

VRF Systems Chillers Heat Pumps
04
Screw Compressor

Industrial continuous compressor. Two helical screw rotors compress gas as they rotate. High capacity, reliable, and ideal for continuous operation.

Industrial Refrigeration Large Chillers Cold Storage
05
Centrifugal Compressor

Uses a high-speed impeller to give gas velocity, then a diffuser converts that velocity into pressure. Used in very large, high-capacity HVAC systems.

Large HVAC Systems District Cooling Power Plants
CHAPTER 02

Why Compressors Fail

Common causes, warning signs & prevention

The compressor is the most expensive component in any HVAC or refrigeration system. Understanding why it fails helps you prevent costly breakdowns and extend its service life.

⚠️ Main Causes of Failure:

🌑️

High Discharge Temperature

Overheating breaks down lubricating oil, damages motor windings, and causes permanent internal damage. Most common cause of failure in UAE.

πŸ’§

Liquid Slugging

Liquid refrigerant enters the compressor. Since liquids cannot be compressed, this causes severe mechanical damage β€” bent rods, broken valves, cracked pistons.

πŸ”‹

Electrical Issues

Voltage imbalance, single phasing, low voltage, or high current draw damages motor windings and causes premature failure.

πŸ›’οΈ

Oil Failure / Contamination

Low oil level or contaminated oil causes friction, wear, and bearing failure. Regular oil checks are essential for long compressor life.

πŸ’¨

Moisture Contamination

Water in the system reacts with refrigerant and oil to form corrosive acid, destroying internal components and filter driers.

🚨 WARNING SIGNS β€” Act Immediately:

●Fails to start
●High amperage draw
●Unusual noise/vibration
●Poor cooling
●Frequent overload trips
●Excessive temperature
CHAPTER 03

Compressor Failure Types

Diagnose and understand each failure mode

1. Mechanical Failure

PHYSICAL

Physical damage to bearings, pistons, valves, or connecting rods. Usually caused by liquid slugging or lack of lubrication.

πŸ”Š Signs: Loud knocking, seized compressor, metal in oil

2. Electrical Failure

ELECTRICAL

Motor winding burnout or insulation failure due to voltage problems, overheating, or phase loss.

⚑ Signs: High amperage, burnt smell, overload trips

3. Winding Burnout

THERMAL

Motor windings overheat due to high discharge temp, voltage imbalance, or locked rotor. Causes acid contamination throughout the entire system.

🌑️ Causes: High temp, voltage issues, frequent cycling

4. Liquid Slugging Damage

MECHANICAL

Liquid refrigerant or oil enters the compression chamber, causing broken valves, bent connecting rods, and cracked pistons.

πŸ›‘οΈ Prevention: Proper superheat, crankcase heater, correct charge

βœ… Preventive Maintenance Checklist:

βœ” Check oil level monthly
βœ” Monitor suction pressure
βœ” Check discharge pressure
βœ” Verify electrical supply
βœ” Clean condenser coils
βœ” Replace filter drier
βœ” Check refrigerant charge
βœ” Use crankcase heater

CHAPTER 05

Interview Questions & Answers

Prepare confidently for your HVAC job interview

Q1. What is the function of a compressor in HVAC?

The compressor compresses low-pressure refrigerant gas into high-pressure, high-temperature gas. This allows refrigerant to release heat at the condenser and absorb heat at the evaporator β€” completing the refrigeration cycle.

Q2. What is the difference between R-22 and R-410A?

R-22 is an HCFC refrigerant that damages the ozone layer (ODP: 0.055) and has been globally banned. R-410A is an HFC with zero ODP but a very high GWP (2088). They operate at different pressures and are not interchangeable.

Q3. What causes liquid slugging in a compressor?

Liquid slugging occurs when liquid refrigerant enters the compressor cylinder. Causes: low superheat, overcharge, failed expansion valve, or no crankcase heater after long shutdown. Prevention: maintain superheat 5–10Β°C, always use crankcase heater.

Q4. Scroll vs Reciprocating compressor β€” key differences?

Scroll compressors use spiral scrolls β€” quieter, more efficient, fewer parts, used in split ACs and VRF systems. Reciprocating compressors use pistons β€” louder, better for high-pressure industrial applications like oil & gas plants and refineries.

Q5. What are normal operating pressures for R-410A?

Suction: 118–130 PSI (8–9 bar) | Discharge: 350–400 PSI (24–27 bar). High discharge = condenser problem or overcharge. Low suction = refrigerant undercharge or blocked evaporator coil.
